Each year millions of individuals are abandoning cable in favor of streaming - and more and more are also finding IPTV. The terms may be misleading soon. The terms IPTV Portal, Stalker, STBEmu, and Xtream are thrown around without much description. This article simplifies it all, and you are able to appreciate what you are using and why.
What Is an IPTV Portal?
The IPTV Portal is nothing more than a gateway a server-side interface providing live television channels, video-on-demand and media streams with an internet connection. In comparison to the conventional broadcasting, IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) is produced with the use of IP networks i.e. your TV signal passes the path of a web page.
When you log in to an IPTV portal, you are actually logging into a hosted service which will verify your account and deliver content to you. Imagine it to be logging in to a streaming platform, however, tailored to the use of IPTV-compatible devices and apps.
The IPTV portals are capable of supporting various protocols and formats. The two most used are the Stalker Middleware protocol and the Xtream Codes API - both being highly applicable throughout the IPTV ecosystem.
Stalker Middleware and STBEmu: Two Products that transformed IPTV
Stalker Middleware is open-source IPTV middleware platform that was initially created to be used with set-top boxes. It was meant to handle and provide media content to hardware of physical STB (Set-Top Box). When you mention the word Stalker Portal, it is an IPTV portal that is constructed with this middleware.
Here's where STBEmu comes in. Not all of them have a physical set-top box, and that is where the STBEmu app (Set-Top Box Emulator) comes in to fill the gap. The STBEmu is an Android application that simulates the action of a physical set-top box. It also emulates the hardware environment that Stalker Middleware anticipates, so any Android device, be it a phone, tablet or a TV box, can be configured to use a Stalker-based IPTV portal as though it were real hardware.
Generally to use STBEmu with a Stalker portal you require:
- The portal address of your IPTV service
- MAC address (created by the application or actual)
- An appropriate subscription associated with such MAC address.
This integration of the STBEmu with a Stalker IPTV portal has become one of the most popular ways of accessing IPTV content on Android-based devices. It is also lightweight, stable and it replicates the feel of a conventional set-top box, though no set-top box is needed.
IPTV Xtream: The Other Significant Standard
IPTV world is Stalker on the one hand, and Xtream Codes on the other. IPTV Xtream is an IPTV service providing that applies the Xtream Codes API a popular standard in the delivery of live streams, VOD (video on demand), and series content.
In contrast to the MAC-address system of Stalker portals, Xtream IPTV usually relies on a basic authentication system based on a username, password and server address. That is why it is easy to install on a large variety of IPTV players, TiviMate, IPTV Smarters, and many others.
A portal that supports Xtream gives an access to an M3U playlist and an EPG (Electronic Program Guide), this enables your app to show channel names, logos and program schedules, which is almost similar to a normal television.
Stalker vs. Xtream: Which of These to Use?
Both Stalker portal IPTV and Xtream IPTV achieve the same final aim i.e. to deliver streams on your screen, however, they are different in their structure and flexibility.
Stalker / STBEmu is most compatible with IPTV providers who provide a portal based on MAC address or simply favor the set-top box interface. It is more so widespread among older IPTV providers and services that target hardware users.
Xtream is generally more adaptable. Since it supports standard login credentials and offers a clean API, it is compatible with more recent IPTV applications and is likely to work more with smart TVs, Firestick and Android TV boxes.
Other IPTV plans are compatible with each format, and you can switch according to your gadget and the app of your choice.
A Few Things Worth Knowing
The IPTV technology is not a problem by itself, as it is used by broadcasters, hotels, hospitals and enterprises all over the world. Nevertheless, the service quality and legality of a particular IPTV provider is defined by the provider and the content they are licensed to provide. It is always important to ensure the service that you subscribe to has the correct broadcasting rights of the channels available.
When you are building an IPTV portal the first thing is to ensure that you have a stable internet connection - at least 25 Mbps to stream HD, and 50 Mbps or above to stream 4K. Wireless Ethernet will never match wired Ethernet in terms of reliable, no buffering streaming.
It makes you better than the general user having the knowledge of the difference between an IPTV portal, Stalker middleware, STBEmu, and Xtream. As soon as you understand the functions of each part, it is easy to select the correct configuration of the device you are interested in.
