IPTV Isn't Magic — Here's Exactly How STBemu, Stalker Portal, and Xtream Codes Work

There is no information that most people who create an IPTV service have an inkling about what goes on beneath the interface. They put on an app, type a URL, and channels are displayed. Such a process is smooth - and it is. However, the simplicity is being pulled by three different technologies: STBemu, the Stalker Portal protocol, and Xtream Codes API. This difference is important, as each of them relates differently, acts differently and fails differently.

This paper describes the three of them simply, without the use of complex terms.

This is to say, what IPTV is and what it actually is, before anything else

Internet Protocol Television is abbreviated as IPTV. An IPTV service uses the same protocols as web pages and emails to deliver video streams instead of coming through a cable or the satellite dish. The user requires an app or device that is compatible, a reliable internet connection and access credentials issued by an IPTV service provider.

The three technologies mentioned here are other ways through which IPTV app communicates with a server. Consider them to be languages, the app and server should be able to speak the same language.

STBemu: The App That Simulates a Hardware Set-Top Box

STBemu, which is an abbreviation of Set-Top Box Emulator, is an Android application that tries to mimic the behavior of a Mag set-top box, a physical device previously used with IPTV often. Since several IPTV providers initially developed their infrastructure based on the Mag hardware, STBemu enables users to connect to the same servers using their smartphone, their Android TV box, or Fire Stick without having to purchase the actual physical device.

Whenever a user opens STBemu and inserts a portal URL, the application identifies itself to the server as a Mag device. The server then authenticates it and provides a list of channels, EPG (electronic program guide) and video-on-demand material in the same manner that it does a physical box.

STBemu and Stalker portal speak each other, they are meant to go hand in hand.

STBemu is configured using what is known as Stalker Portal URL. That point of contact is what is referred to as the bridge between the content server and the app.

Stalker Portal: The Protocol of the Portal URL

The Stalker Portal is not an application, but a middleware server that was initially created by Infomir to be used with Mag boxes. It serves as the back up system to manage user accounts, categorize channels and provide authentication, as well as broadcast content to devices that are linked.

Where an IPTV provider has a Stalker Portal, they host a web address - which is the portal URL - that can be accessed by compatible applications such as STBemu. The portal then checks the MAC address (a unique hardware identifier) of the device and if it is a valid subscription and grants or denies access.

This is the authentication based on MAC-address, which is one of the distinguishing features of the Stalker Portal IPTV system. It implies that subscription is bound to a device identity but not a username and password. Under STBemu, the user is required to provide the portal URL and a MAC address either the actual address of the device or an address generated by the service.

Xtream Codes: The Username-and-Password Alternative

Whereas Stalker Portal utilizes the MAC addresses, Xtream Codes implements an entirely new authentication model namely; a username, a password, and a server URL. The three of this information are what is generally referred to as an Xtream Codes API connection or just an Xtream IPTV login.

Xtream Codes was initially a commercial IPTV panel software used to be very popular. Although in 2019 the authorities shut its original company, the API format it created was an open standard since replicated by hundreds of IPTV panel developers. Most IPTV providers today are able to connect using Xtream Codes.

Xtream Codes portal provides a structured data feed in the form of channels, VOD titles, series, which are read and displayed by compatible apps. There is no MAC address involved as compared to Stalker Portal. The qualifications are the only way in. This has led to Xtream dominance in the IPTV industry due to this simplicity.

STBemu vs. Xtream Codes: What One to use?

This will all be determined by what the IPTV provider provides. There are providers that give out portal URL and a MAC address, these need STBemu or any other Stalker compatible app. Other services give a username and password together with a server URL those need an Xtream-compatible app such as TiviMate, IPTV Smarters or Televizo.

In certain modes, STBemu supports both and is therefore a very flexible option to users who alternate between providers or can benchmark multiple services. Nevertheless, the pure Xtream connections would usually be provided through a dedicated Xtream player with a cleaner experience and enhanced EPG support, and faster loading.

The most important practical lesson here: it is essential to recognize what kind of credentials is provided by the provider before deciding on the app. Portal URL and MAC are Stalker Portal - use STBemu. URL server and username and password = Xtream Codes use Xtream player.

A Note on Responsible Use

The IPTV technology is also totally neutral. The IPTV is lawfully used by broadcasters, hospitals, universities, and hotels to deliver videos on their internal networks. Valid subscription services which own valid broadcast rights use the same protocols.

The technology is only problematic when it is applied to access contents without the permission of those holding the rights. It is the role of the viewers to ensure that the providers they subscribe to have genuine licenses to the contents they are dispensing. Although one may be in doubt, it is always easy to take services that are clear about licensing since they will be the only right and just way to go.
