When an IPTV provider installs a Stalker portal it provides subscribers with a portal URL, a MAC address (generated by STBEmu or associated with a real device), and often a serial number and signature associated with a particular device.
The process of putting up STBEmu is as follows:
- Launch the application and then find the option, Settings - Profiles - Add Profile.
- Enter a name for the profile
- In the Portal Settings, insert your Stalker portal URL as it is (i.e., as is, not as changed) (e.g., as http://provider-domain.com/c/).
- In the box, input the MAC address you are registered with by your provider - this is important because Stalker portals identify individuals using MAC address, otherwise known as username/password.
- Save and restart the profile
The portal will deny the connection in case the MAC address is different than that of the provider in the system. This is the most frequent failure point with the services provided by Stalker and STBEmu (IPTV) based on Stalker.
Xtream IPTV: Portal-less Credentials-Based Streaming
Xtream Codes (exclusively known as Xtream IPTV) is quite another thing altogether. Xtream also uses a username-password-server URL authentication to stream and authenticate users instead of MAC address authentication over a portal.
Xtream API is popular with many IPTV players such as TiviMate, IPTV Smarters, Perfect Player, and so forth. To use Xtream credentials, frequently you must have:
- Server URL- this is the root address of the Xtream server of the provider(e.g. http://server-address:port).
- Username -- your account login
- Password- your account password.

- You were provided with a server URL, user name and password by your provider.

EPG fails to load in STBEmu: Other Stalker portals have to have EPG enabled on the server side. Request your provider whether EPG is already in your subscription or not.
The Real Truth behind IPTV Services
The IPTV technology is stable and developed. Applications such as STBEmu are fully developed, Xtream-compatible players are easily available, and Stalker portal infrastructure systems have been running on large scale over ten years.
What is different is quality of provider. The uptime of the servers, the reliability of the channels, resolving streams and customer support are very varied among the providers. The configuration procedure including connecting STBEmu to a Stalker portal or keying in the Xtream credentials properly is the simple aspect. The more long term and difficult part is the selection of a provider that has a stable infrastructure.
