IPTV Decoded Understanding Xtream and STBemu

You simply wanted to watch the TV. You wanted to lie on a couch, press a button and relax after a hard day's work. Instead, you ended up in front of a screen, overwhelmed by jargon.

The MAC addresses, the portal URL, the emulators and the APIs. You'd need a computer science degree to watch a football match or just watch the evening news.

Millions of people are facing this situation as they move to digital television. Great technology but poor explanation. While you may think your industry is supposed to teach you how to configure the back end of a server, they leave you feeling frustrated and confused. Let's take off the mumbo-jumbo. Let's take a look at the technology in layman's terms so you can decide on the best setup for your home.

This is all you need to know about your TV systems.

The Shift to IPTV

You can't learn the tools without learning the foundation. IPTV is also known as Internet Protocol Television. Television used to be broadcast on satellite dishes or underground cables. This was a closed circuit. Today, IPTV brings those live television channels to you via your regular internet connection.

Imagine the Internet to be an enormous network of pipes leading into your home. Typically these pipes are used for browsing the web or reading email (small cups of water). IPTV employs the same pipes to send a constant, heavy flow of water, that is, your live television.

But your TV has to have something to help you structure this big pile of data into something that's manageable for clickable TV guide information. Service providers do this by implementing certain management systems. The two popular systems in the world are the stalker portal iptv system and the Xtream system.

Understanding the Stalker Portal IPTV System

The most popular television hardware for sending video over the Internet for years was the MAG box. It was a small, private computer that was mounted beneath your TV. In order to ensure the work of this box, the developers developed a software middleware, called Stalker (now Ministra).

If you're using a stalker portal iPTV service, you're entering into a very secure and closed loop system. It operates on a unique identifier, known as the MAC address, which is a string of numbers and letters associated with a physical device (typically beginning with 00:1A:79).

Why providers use it: It provides complete control for them. This means that subscribing to a service through this means would involve providing the service provider with the device's MAC address. This address is whitelisted on their server. As soon as you power on your TV, it extracts the provider's portal URL, the server recognizes the MAC address and loads your live channels and video-on-demand content instantly!

The user experience is very fluid. It is a true representation of the old cable box. The negative is rigidity though. Your access will be permanently tied to one particular MAC address so you can't easily log in your account when travelling with your mobile phone. The subscription information for that app lives only there, in the living room.

The versatility of Xtream

The market was looking for a more flexible option due to the inflexibility of MAC address binding. This resulted in the roll-out of Xtream, commonly known as the Xtream Codes API

Whereas Stalker may be a physical key which unlocks one particular door, Xtream is a digital passcode which unlocks everything. With an xtream setup, only three pieces of information are needed, rather than a hardware MAC address:
  1. A Server URL
  2. A Username
  3. A Password

This small change in the structure completely alters the user experience. You're not locked into any single piece of hardware as you're logging in with a username and password. An xtream-compatible app is available for you to log into from your living room TV. Then at some later point you can download another app for your phone, using the same credentials and continue where you left off.

This system also generates M3U playlists—a universally recognized file format that contains the links to all your media. Nearly all existing media players are capable of reading M3U files, and the xtream framework is the most flexible and easiest-to-use for those who wish to view content on many devices.

Bridging the Gap: iptv stbemu

If you buy a subscription that is definitely a stalker portal, but do not wish to spend $100 on a physical MAG box? You already have a powerful Android Smart TV, an Amazon Firestick – why do you need another piece of plastic?

It's the same frustration that led to the creation of iptv stbemu.

iptv stbemu (Set-Top Box Emulator) is an app that can be installed on your Android device. It's an emulator, as implied by its name. It makes the provider's server believe that its regular android TV is actually a dedicated MAG box.

In the iptv stbemu, you will get a user interface that fully emulates the old fashioned hardware. It's easy to set up and you navigate to the app's settings, make a new "Profile" and enter the portal URL that your service will provide you. The great thing about the emulator is that it creates a virtual MAC address. You just have to locate this virtual MAC address in the app settings, send it to your provider, have it whitelisted and your normal smart TV is now a dedicated stalker device.

Makes a rigid, very stable, cable-driving experience without any extra hardware.

The Bottom Line

Technology should be used for you, not the other way around. When it comes to watching TV, there should be no battle.

For those who want applications and providers to be portable, to watch contents on their phone, tablet, and TV, and to prefer to manage usernames and passwords, you should look for applications and providers that use the xtream framework. Designed for the modern, multi-device home.

For those seeking the classic cable-box experience, with tremendous stability, the stalker portal system is still highly reliable. And with the apps available, such as the iptv stbemu, you can get that stability with your existing hardware.

Home screens are simply sheets of glass. It's the unseen systems, which operate behind them, that make them live. By learning simple terminology of these systems, you will be able to take control of your living room. Choose the system you want, enter in all your information and last of all, watch TV!
