IPTV Portal Setup STBemu, Stalker IPTV & Xtream Explained

Not sure how to make sense of IPTV streaming, and ended up totally lost this article will make it different. These are IPTV Portal, STBemu, Stalker IPTV, and Xtream, which constantly get used and most guides assume that you already know what each one of them means. This one doesn't.

This is precisely what each technology is, how they are all interrelated and what you actually need to get your IPTV service up and running.

What Is an IPTV Portal -And Why It Matters

A server-side endpoint that your application will connect to when loading a channel list, EPG (Electronic Program Guide), or on-demand library is an IPTV portal. Imagine it is the front door to what is in your IPTV provider.

When you subscribe to an IPTV service, the supplier assigns you a portal address - a web address that points to his Stalker Middleware or Xtream Codes server. Your app does not know where to draw content without this URL. The portal is not an application, but the remote address that the application makes a dial.

The majority of portals based on IPTV are constructed with either Stalker Middleware (most often with STBemu) or Xtream Codes API (with Xtream-compatible players). Both will achieve the same goal which is the channeling to your screen but they will be communicating differently.

STBemu: The App that imitates a Set-Top Box

STBemu ( Set-Top Box Emulator ) is an Android application that emulates the behavior of a Mag set-top box. Mag devices are hardcopy IPTV boxes that were used with Stalker Middleware portals. STBemu allows the use of your Android phone, tablet, or TV box as if it were one of those physical devices - without purchasing hardware.

To use STBemu, you need:

  • The IPTV portal (i.e. your IPTV service) URL.
  • MAC address (the real MAC of your device or one which is provided by your provider)

When set up, STBemu will then connect to the Stalker portal and install the entire channel interface, as it would with a Mag box. The user interface is more of a traditional cable TV interface - categories, live TV, VOD (video on demand), and a program guide.

STBemu is specifically popular, as it is implementable with Stalker Middleware portals (by default), so is the preferred choice of providers whose infrastructure is based on Stalker Middleware.

Stalker IPTV: The Portal Middleware

The Stalker IPTV is the Ministra (previously Stalker) middleware platform - a back-end server that IPTV providers control to distribute their content. It serves as the speed behind the portal URL that is provided to you by your provider.

STBemu is connecting to a Stalker Middleware server when you enter an IPTV portal address into it. This server will manage to verify your MAC address, make sure you are subscribing and send you the right channel list in your app.

Stalker IPTV middleware supports operators to create categories, time restrictions and control subscriber accounts and supports thousands of simultaneous users. To a user, it is non-existent but it is what drives the portal.

It should be known: Stalker IPTV is not a streamer. It is the infrastructure which is in between your application and the real video streams.

Xtream Codes: The other type of IPTV Portal

Xtream Codes (or Xtream IPTV) is another panel system that is similar to Stalker Middleware, and is has an entirely different connection format. Rather than a portal URL and a MAC address, an Xtream connection needs:

  • A portal endpoint (server URL).
  • A username
  • A password

The combination includes three parts that provide access to the content of the provider using any player that is supported by Xtream, including IPTV Smarters, TiviMate, or Perfect Player.

The reason behind the widespread adoption of Xtream Codes API is that it is easy to install and widely compatible across applications and platforms. A number of contemporary IPTV providers provide Xtream credentials as the main connection mechanism, although they may be using another system in the back-end.

M3U playlist generation is also supported by the Xtream portal (that is, you can generate your own channel list in the form of a standard M3U file and use it with virtually any IPTV player that supports M3U playlists).

STBemu vs Xtream, which connection is better to use?

This technique will entirely hinge on the support of your IPTV provider.

When a provider provides you with a portal URL and a MAC address, you then use STBemu (or any other Stalker-compatible app) to log into their portal based on Stalker IPTV.

When you have a server URL, username and password provided by your provider, then you can use an Xtream compatible player to access the Xtream Codes API.

Some providers offer both. Then it is preference when it comes to your decision. STBemu provides a more conventional TV-like experience whereas Xtream players tend to be more customizable, have more EPG support and run smoother on newer devices.

The Platform of IPTV Portal: An Easy Entry

Firstly, call your IPTV provider and request him/her to:

  • Do you use Stalker portal or Xtream Codes?
  • Which is my portal URL or server URL?
  • What is my MAC address, my username and my password?

Having this information, you can set up STBemu to use a Stalker IPTV portal or enter your Xtream credentials into any of the players that will work with it. Technology is not very complicated as long as you are familiar with the system you are dealing with.

The Bottom Line to IPTV Portal Technology

The universe of IPTV portal, STBemu, Stalker IPTV and Xtream can be unnecessarily complex, however the underlying idea is straightforward. You have a server that contains content that you have, you have an app on your device that you have and you have a portal that connects the two. Whether such connection passes though a Stalker Middleware portal which has a MAC address or an Xtream Codes API which has a username and a password, the outcome is the same: live channels and on-demand content will be delivered straight to your screen.

This is all you need to know your connection type, set up your app and the rest will do the rest.
