Watch More, Pay Less The IPTV Xtream Guide Nobody Gave You

Cable subscriptions have been silently substituted by IPTV services by millions of households. It is not that new technology has emerged recently, but rather than a company relying on it for its own gain, the tools that allow the technology to be utilized have become age-old, namely, IPTV Xtream, IPTV portal setups, Stalker middleware, and the application such as STBemu. This paper describes how they work exactly, why they are different and what to be careful of before settling on any of them.

The meaning of IPTV Xtream

IPTV Xtream (also commonly referred to as Xtream-Codes API) is a delivery protocol that content providers use to deliver live channels, video-on-demand and catch-up television over the internet. Instead of transmitting a signal on a cable or a satellite dish, an IPTV Xtreams provider is transmitted directly to your device by means of an internet connection. You are given a URL, a username and a password three data that can open up a complete list of channels on any player that is compatible.

The proposal is simple, one IPTV Xtream subscription can enable the live sports and international news, children programs and even on-demand movies under one roof and at a large fraction of what a cable subscription costs. It became standardized that virtually all large IPTV players nowadays have built-in support of Xtream login.

One portal is an IPTV portal, another is a Stalker setup, and the third one is an Xtream login, all to the same destination of bringing live TV to your screen.

IPTV portal: the interface-level

The web-based or app-based front end that is used to browse and launch streams is referred to as an IPTV portal. Consider it a shop window: the portal puts the channels in categories, the EPG (electronic programme guide) as well as the content displayed in an uncluttered grid or list view.

Certain IPTV portals are proprietary and they are created by specific providers to their own platforms. Others are based on open middleware. A provider referring to you to go to your portal URL is requesting you to point your device or application at their server and thus have them download your personalised channel list and guide data. The portal is not a streaming system, it is just an organisational interface that passes playback to the underlying engine.

Reasons why stalker middleware is still in existence

An older, but common-in-use, system is stalker middleware, which was originally intended to be used on set-top boxes. It also does not require a username and a password to authenticate subscribers but instead a MAC address. This is because when a device is connected to a Stalker based IPTV portal, it transmits its MAC address to the server which compares it with a subscriber database and allows or blocks access to it.

Stalker-based configurations are still in use since millions of physical set-top boxes were sold with Stalker clients installed and providers that developed their back end on the Stalker middleware have little incentive to change, as do customers whose hardware is compatible. The disadvantage being that MAC addresses are hardware-dependent and thus it is difficult to watch the same subscription across devices at the same time, which the Xtream API solves to a great extent.

STBemu: a program that believes it is a computer

STBemu (Set-Top Box Emulator) addresses people who do not have a physical Stalker-compatible device by solving the compatibility issue. The application simulates a MAG-style set-top box in software and presents a virtual MAC address and links to any Stalker-based IPTV portal as actual hardware.

In practical terms, this implies that you can put STBemu on an Android phone or tablet or TV box and type in the portal URL of your provider like you would on a physical device. The emulator is the emulator which does the authentication hand shake and loads your channel list and gives you a familiar TV looking interface with an EPG grid, favourites and parental controls. The experience is similar to a dedicated set-top box to the majority of the users.

One of the things to consider: STBemu needs an active portal subscription. The app itself is free but access to the content is all about service to which one is linked. Before making any purchase, always ensure that any provider that you subscribe is doing business within the laws of your country.

Decision to take Xtream, Stalker or portal setups

To achieve the right format, it is subject to your devices and priorities. The most portable is IPTV Xtream credentials, which are compatible with VLC, TiviMate, IPTV Smarters, and dozens of other apps on all of the largest platforms. To achieve flexibility and watch on multiple devices, an Xtream-compatible provider is an easier option.

In case of an available physical set-top box or as wanting the traditional TV interface, a Stalker-based IPTV portal with STBemu on mobile can provide a similar experience. The portals provided by providers who operate Stalker middleware are often well-established and have undergone extensive testing as the technology is not a more recent development.

Anyhow, it does not really matter what delivery protocol is used but the quality of the stream in terms of uptime, consistency in the bitrate and server capacity during the peak sports events. A reliable provider over a Stalker backend will beat an unreliable provider any time that it provides Xtream credentials.

A word on responsible use

The IPTV technology is not illegal and it is applied by licensed broadcasters all over the world. Licensed platforms also use the same protocols that operate IPTV Xtream services, portal setups, and STBemu emulation. It is not the mode through which content is delivered that matters but the origin of the content. Being a subscriber to a licensed IPTV service is just like being a subscriber to any other streaming service - one pays to access it, and the owner of this content is entitled to disseminate it.
