IPTV Explained STBEmu, Stalker Portal & Xtream

The majority of people are worn out with the conventional television. You have to pay a fortune for hundreds of channels you don't watch, and sign up to expensive contracts to view the few shows you do watch.

You are familiar with the internet, which provides a better way. You want choices. You want control. The second you move away from the standard cable, though, you're faced with a whole wall of techno jargon.

On Sunday afternoons, it seems like you have to have a degree in computer networking to watch a movie. This is not supposed to be the case! Technology is supposed to make our lives easier, not more complicated.

If you have been researching modern streaming options, then you've likely encountered a host of jargon. It is important to understand the framework to get the viewing experience you desire. Let's demystify and explain how this technology works.

The Foundation: What is IPTV?

Learning about IPTV is essential when you want to have an understanding of the contemporary streaming environment.

IPTV is an acronym for Internet Protocol Television. Your TV is sent entirely via your internet connection, so that’s the only way there is a satellite dish on your roof or a fiber-optic cable bringing the signal in.

This isn't simply about viewing live TV. A true IPTV broadcasts live TV, 'catch up TV' (catching up with shows that aired days before) and Video on Demand (such as movies and series) all on one digital pipeline. The beauty of IPTV is that it's helpful and effective. The traditional cable sends all the channels at once requiring large bandwidths. Only the channel you select is sent by IPTV.

However, the delivery method is what is called IPTV. You have to have software that turns the internet data into a user interface to actually view it on your TV, computer or phone. That's where the tools come in.

The Bridge: why STBEmu matters

Back then, if you desired to see IPTV on your major living room TV, you needed to acquire a physical product called MAG box. Under your TV was a hard work piece of plastic, and expensive.

Today, it's not an actual box you need. All you need is a way to duplicate what that box did. STBEmu is doing just that.

STBEmu (Set-Top Box Emulator) is a software program that can be downloaded on Android devices, Firesticks as well as Smart TVs. It simulates the internal program of the older physical MAG boxes.

When you start STBEmu, it creates a virtual hardware address for your STBEmu, known as a MAC address (typically beginning with 00:1A:79). This is a particular MAC address that you provide to your provider. This is the address that the provider attaches to your service. The STBEmu app, in turn, installs the visuals, the channel lists and the movie categories right on your screen. It connects your provider's servers to your living room, so you don't have to purchase an extra piece of hardware.

The Stalker Portal is unlocked using the Engine

The virtual box in your house is STBEmu and the Stalker Portal is the engine on the other side of the world that is sending the video to you.

You will be asked to enter a certain web address when you set up your STBEmu app. This address will direct you directly to a Stalker Portal.

A Stalker Portal is an integrated application or applet written in a special type of middle-ware (usually using the Ministra TV middle-ware). It is like the central control over an IPTV operation. It's tasked with managing the very large databases of live channels, keeping the EPG (Electronic Program Guide) current so you can see what is currently being broadcast at what time, and to classify movies by genre.

When you use a Stalker Portal, you're receiving a very structured and grid television experience. It is much like a traditional Cable TV Guide. The Stalker Portal is incredibly secure, and all features are customised to your subscription, since it uses your MAC address to authenticate you. But it also means that your subscription is typically tied to that one MAC address which will reside on one device.

The Alternative: Connecting with Xtream

What if you want to have another device? If you would like to watch the news on your smart TV in the morning, and finish a movie in your tablet during a flight?

This is where Xtream is involved.

Xtream (also known as the Xtream Codes API) is a completely different protocol to access IPTV. Xtream makes login easy, as opposed to a complex STBEmu setup, and does not require a device-locked MAC address.

Your provider will provide you with three easy to access details to connect using Xtream – a Server URL, a Username, and a Password.

These three pieces of information can be input into hundreds of applications on Apple, Android, Windows and Smart TVs. The Xtream protocol downloads an M3U file, which is a digital text file containing the direct Web links to all individual channels and movies in your package.

Xtream is very popular among those who like flexibility. It is much easier to handle, since it is in simple username and password format. When navigating the Xtream API, it efficiently filters out the live television streams from the Video on Demand content, which means you can navigate quickly and responsively, whether you're holding a phone or a tablet.

Making the Right Choice

It's not just a software engineer that can take control of your home entertainment.

Both the cable-interfaced STBEmu running on a Stalker Portal and the multi-device flexible Xtream login aim to the same end. It's about delivering the content you want, when you want, without the high price tag of traditional TV.

If you know the answers to the question of how IPTV works you have the advantage. If you understand the difference between Stalker Portal and the Xtream login, you will be able to select the one that best fits your lifestyle.

Technology shouldn't be a barrier. It should be a tool that is helpful to you! So now you have the code.
