IPTV, StbEmu, and Stalker Portals Explained

Media consumption is more than ever changed. From physical antennas to satellite dishes and now, pure data. To learn about modern digital broadcasting, it is important to learn the elements that make it possible. It's not simply a matter of having a screen, it's an architecture of the screen.

To move around in this space, it is important to understand 4 pillars: IPTV, the Stalker Portal, IPTV Xtream protocols and the StbEmu interface. Combined into these four, it gives a flawless viewing experience. When one collapses, the whole thing comes crashing down.

This is how the current streaming ecosystem really works.

The Foundation: Understanding IPTV

IPTV is the term used to describe Internet Protocol Television. You're not getting the TV content from a radio wave or fiber-optic cable that's devoted to a provider, you're getting it through the same path you use for your email and social media.

IPTV's value is straightforward; it's efficient. The old school of broadcasting sends all channels to your home at once, using up a ton of bandwidth. Only the specific stream that you request is sent with Internet-based protocols. This enables thousands of worldwide choices without blocking the digital stream.

But it's not enough to be the "raw" stream. You need to structure, secure and show that data. The emulators and middleware are where that comes in.

The Middleware: The Stalker Portal Architecture

The water is the stream and the plumbing is the Stalker Portal. The Stalker middleware was first created for Infomir's MAG line of STBs and later became the standard for content organization in huge content libraries.

A Stalker Portal is like a bridge. It is used to link the user's equipment to the provider's server. It does everything to do with the "look and feel" of the interface; the electronic program guide (EPG), the categorization of channels, and the video-on-demand (VOD) libraries.

One of the most important features of a Stalker Portal is that it is an identifier by MAC address. This is a “hardware ID” that identifies a particular device. This is because you will type in a portal URL when you enter it into your device, and the server will check to see whether your MAC address is permitted. If it is, the portal displays all the interface on the screen. It is a server-side solution, meaning the bulk of the work is done elsewhere, so as to give a better performance with less powerful pieces of equipment.

The Integration: IPTV Xtream Codes

Unlike Stalker, IPTV Xtream protocol also works differently, using the API login for authentication, also known as Xtream Codes.

The IPTV Xtream framework altered the game by making streaming more accessible throughout various varieties of devices. A user just needs three pieces of information, instead of needing a particular hardware ID,
  1. The Server URL
  2. A Username
  3. A Password

This is an API based approach which is often favoured by frequent device switching. The IPTV Xtream credentials are identical across each type of device, be it a smartphone, tablet or smart TV. It translates the data into a structured format that can be understood by any contemporary application. It’s the "plug-and-play" version of digital broadcasting. It offers the same level of quality streams, but with a more relaxed handshake between the server and the client.

The interface: Getting the most out of StbEmu

Most don't want to purchase 5 different hardware boxes for 5 different rooms. They would like to access their existing devices such as an Android TV stick or tablet. That is where the StbEmu comes into play.

The StbEmu is an emulator. It does nothing more than to fool the server and let it believe that it's a normal Android phone, instead of a dedicated IPTV set-top box (like a MAG box). StbEmu allows the user to enjoy the full capabilities of a Stalker Portal without the need for the respective proprietary hardware.

Here's the secret: Configuration. Within StbEmu, a user sets up a "Profile." The Stalker Portal URL and Emulated MAC address are included in this profile. After it is setup, the app makes use of the provider interface just as if it had been on a superior high-end dedicated box.

What's so great about StbEmu is that it's customizable. Map can be adjusted remotely, multiple portals can be managed in a single application, and video players can be changed. It is a step between pro and home video equipment.

Modern Streaming – Technical Synergy.

It is important to understand the fitment of these pieces to achieve optimum results. You aren't "watching TV" but rather managing a stream of data.

The StbEmu app sends a request when it is opened. If your configuration is a Stalker Portal, it will pass your Mac address to the server. Server confirms the credentials and sends the UI and channel list back. The app requests the same data from the API if you are using an IPTV Xtream login, but with your username and password.

It's in the stability of the connection that the “magic” occurs. Since IPTV uses the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) or Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), your viewing quality will be directly affected by both the quality of your local network and the amount of traffic that is running on the provider's server.

Precise details matter:
  •    Bandwidth: A typical HD stream will need approximately 8-10 Mbps. 25 Mbps or higher is needed for 4K.
  •    Latency: If the latency is high, the StbEmu app is waiting for the next packet of data and displays "buffering".
  •    Hardware: StbEmu is available for most Android devices, but is limited by device processing power on how quickly the Stalker Portal menus will load.

The Humane Element: Why It Matters

Ultimately, these technologies are designed to bring people to information and entertainment. It could be a family who fled their own nation and are watching the news on a Stalker Portal, or a sports enthusiast who likes to watch an overseas match that's not on the local television network - access is always the objective.

Technology should be a means to communication. StbEmu is not as complex as it appears, nor are the protocols of IPTV. The vision is to make the world a place where geography is not a limiting factor in learning and viewing.

Final Thoughts

Digital media is complicated, but it's not hard to navigate. Once you know what IPTV is, the power of the Stalker Portal, the flexibility of the IPTV Xtream codes and the emulating power of StbEmu, you'll have control over your media consumption.

These are not tools that software engineers need to master, but they do require a knowledge of the stack. If you are aware of how data flows from the server to the screen, you can troubleshoot, optimize and enjoy a better viewing experience.
